Moroccan Leather Pouf Buying Guide: Size, Shape, Style and Filling

Quick answerStart with how you will use the pouf. Choose a round pouf (about 20 in wide, 12 in high) for a footrest or a soft accent, and a square pouf (about 17.7 in wide, 15.75 in high) for a tray stand or a more structured look. Then pick embroidered, plain or engraved leather to match your interior. Our poufs arrive unstuffed, ready to fill to the firmness you like.

What will you use the pouf for?

A Moroccan leather pouf can do several jobs, and the right model depends on which one matters most to you.

  • Footrest: a round pouf, filled medium-firm, sits at a comfortable height in front of most sofas and armchairs.
  • Tray stand or low side table: a square pouf has a flatter top and holds a tray more steadily.
  • Occasional low seat: either shape works when it is filled firmly and evenly.
  • Decorative accent: choose the color and finish first; the shape matters less.

Round poufs soften a room full of straight lines, such as a rectangular sofa and coffee table. Square poufs line up neatly with that same furniture and fit into corners. Before ordering, mark the size on the floor with masking tape to check that you keep enough room to walk around it.

Embroidered, plain or engraved?

All three are handmade from genuine goatskin leather by artisans in Fez and Marrakech. The difference is in the decoration.

Style What it looks like Works best in
Embroidered Hand-stitched geometric or floral motifs on the top and seams Traditional, eclectic and warm interiors
Plain No embroidery; the leather grain and panel seams carry the design Minimalist, Scandinavian and modern rooms
Hand-engraved Patterns worked into the leather panels, often in two colors Rooms that need one statement piece
Cognac and beige hand-engraved Moroccan leather pouf in a modern living room
Hand-engraved panels make the pouf the focal point of the room.

Which color suits your room?

  • Light, neutral rooms: natural beige, silver gray or white and gray stay discreet and add texture without contrast.
  • Warm wood and cream: honey tan, caramel, cognac and chestnut repeat the warmth of oak and walnut.
  • White walls and gray sofas: black, dark brown or navy blue ground the room and stand out clearly.
  • A neutral room that needs life: one emerald green, forest green, indigo blue or engraved pouf is enough.

Screens and lighting change how a color looks, and natural leather varies slightly from one hide to another. Look at the lifestyle photos on each product page as well as the studio shots.

How do you recognize genuine leather and handwork?

Genuine leather has a visible grain, small natural marks and slight differences in tone. These are signs of a real hide, not defects. Hand stitching is strong but not machine-perfect, and embroidery is stitched through the leather rather than printed or glued on. Our materials and natural variations page shows what to expect.

Why does the pouf arrive unstuffed?

Our poufs are sold as leather covers, and filling is not included. This keeps the parcel light, avoids shipping bulky filling across borders and lets you choose the firmness. A zipper underneath makes filling easy. Clean towels, old blankets, textile offcuts, shredded foam or polyester fiber fill all work. Fill gradually and push material into the edges first so the shape stays even. Our step-by-step filling guide covers the details.

Frequently asked questions

Is a round or square pouf better as a footrest?

A round pouf is the classic footrest: it is lower and its soft edge is comfortable under the legs. A square pouf is taller and works better when it also has to hold a tray.

What is the pouf made of?

Genuine goatskin leather, cut, stitched and finished by hand in Fez and Marrakech.

Can I use the pouf as a seat?

Yes, as an occasional low seat, once it is filled firmly and evenly. Avoid overfilling, which strains the seams.

Do two poufs look different?

Slightly. Each pouf is made by hand from a natural hide, so grain, tone and stitching vary a little from piece to piece.
